Sensex Falls 600 Points Below 73,000 as IT Stocks Slide and Crude Oil Crosses $115

Indian stock markets opened under pressure on Wednesday, October 28, as selling in information technology (IT) shares and rising crude oil prices weighed on investor sentiment. The BSE Sensex fell around 600 points in early trade, slipping below the 73,000 level, while the NSE Nifty 50 also declined amid cautious global market cues.

Major Sensex losers included Infosys, HCL Technologies, Tech Mahindra, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), ITC and Asian Paints. The weakness in IT stocks contributed significantly to the decline in the benchmark indices.

However, some stocks moved against the broader market trend. Larsen & Toubro (L&T) gained more than 4% after reporting strong quarterly earnings, while State Bank of India (SBI) and Axis Bank also traded higher.

Sensex and Nifty Fall as IT Stocks Face Selling Pressure

IT stocks were among the major contributors to Wednesday's market decline. Shares of Infosys, HCL Technologies, Tech Mahindra and TCS came under pressure as investors remained cautious amid uncertain global economic conditions.

Weakness in heavyweight stocks can influence benchmark indices because of their significant representation in the indices. Selling across several major IT companies therefore added to the pressure on the Sensex and Nifty.

Other stocks, including ITC and Asian Paints, also featured among the Sensex's major losers during early trading.

Despite the broad weakness, gains in selected banking and industrial stocks indicated that market performance remained mixed across sectors.

Crude Oil Rises Above $115 Per Barrel

Rising international crude oil prices were another key concern for investors. Brent crude futures, the global benchmark, climbed 1.36% to $115.40 per barrel, increasing concerns about inflation and India's import costs.

India imports a substantial portion of its crude oil requirements, making domestic economic conditions sensitive to sustained increases in global oil prices.

Higher crude prices can increase the country's import bill, put pressure on the rupee and raise transportation and production costs for businesses. If elevated energy prices persist, they could also complicate the inflation outlook and affect corporate profitability.

Geopolitical uncertainty surrounding the Middle East further contributed to concerns about potential supply disruptions.

US-Iran Tensions Add to Market Uncertainty

Market participants remained alert to reports suggesting the possibility of renewed US strikes against Iran after the US midterm elections. Such developments could increase uncertainty over regional stability and global energy supplies.

V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Investments Limited, highlighted the impact of rising crude prices and geopolitical developments on Indian markets.

He noted that Brent crude had climbed above $115 per barrel again, describing the increase as negative for India's economy and equity markets. He also identified the Jio Platforms listing as an important market focus for the day.

Investors are likely to monitor further geopolitical developments because any escalation could lead to additional volatility in crude oil prices and financial markets.

L&T Shares Rally After Strong Quarterly Results

Larsen & Toubro was among the notable gainers in an otherwise weak market. The company's shares rose more than 4% after it reported a 32.5% year-on-year increase in consolidated net profit to ₹5,202.10 crore for the quarter ended September 2026.

The growth in profit was supported by stronger revenue, encouraging investors despite the broader market decline.

State Bank of India and Axis Bank also traded higher, providing some support within the banking sector.

The contrasting performance of L&T and selected banking stocks showed that company-specific earnings and business developments continued to influence individual share prices even as macroeconomic concerns weighed on the broader market.

Jio Platforms Listing in Focus

According to Vijayakumar, the Jio Platforms listing was another development attracting market attention on Wednesday.

Investors were watching the event alongside movements in crude oil prices, geopolitical developments and the performance of major IT stocks.

Market sentiment remained sensitive to these competing factors, with traders assessing both company-specific developments and wider economic risks.

What Lies Ahead for the Indian Stock Market?

The near-term direction of Indian equities will depend on several factors, including international crude oil prices, developments involving the US and Iran, and movements in heavyweight IT stocks.

Investors will also assess corporate earnings and the performance of individual sectors to determine whether the early losses continue or buying interest emerges.

For India, crude oil prices remain particularly important because a sustained rise can affect inflation, the currency, business costs and economic growth.

Conclusion: The Sensex's early decline below 73,000 reflected selling in major IT stocks and concerns over crude oil prices above $115 per barrel. While L&T and selected banking shares gained on company-specific factors, geopolitical uncertainty and energy costs remained important risks for the market.
